Birth isn’t just magic, its hormones!

You might consider labor as a little bit of magic mixed with a little bit of science. There are hormones at play in the creation and growing of your baby. During labor, some of these hormones surge in order to help the body and the baby through the birthing process. What are some of these hormones?

Oxytocin is one most people are familiar with. Everyone knows this one as the “Love Hormone.” That is because oxytocin is responsible for those feel good feelings. The feeling you get from a warm hug from someone you love. It is also released during intimacy. During labor, oxytocin allows for your uterus to produce strong contractions necessary to help baby make their way through the pelvis and down the birth canal. A surge of oxytocin at the end stage of labor will help push out your baby. It helps you bond with baby after birth and can help prevent postpartum hemorrhage.

Beta-Endorphins are natures pain relievers. They are released during exercise, and intimacy. They help you through labor, and breastfeeding and peak at the time of birth. You need to feel calm during labor in order for these to work, just as you would during intimacy. Also helps baby’s lungs develop.

Catecholamines are hormones that act in response to stress. They are sometimes referred to as the “flight or fight” hormones. In early labor, you want to suppress this hormone to allow for oxytocin and beta-endorphins to flow to keep labor increasing. Near the end of labor, at the pushing stage, these hormones are beneficial because they give you the adrenaline boost you need to push your baby out!

Prolactin helps your body make milk for you baby. It helps create attachment to your baby.

Your body is like a cauldron of magic potions. Just a little mix of some powerful hormones, a comforting environment, and a mind, heart, and body connection will create some magic during your labor. Let yourself go, surrender to the hormones, and to your labor.
